Advanced ID reports that it has received numerous enquiries about RFID tyre tagging following the recall of some 450,000 Chinese-made tyres, recently announced in the New York Times and USA Today.
The company was quick to point out that, although its RFID tyre tagging system would not have prevented the manufacture of potentially faulty tyres, it could have greatly eased the administration of such a wide-scale recall by collecting and storing critical historical data (such as batch numbers and manufacturing dates and locations), thereby accurately identifying each tyre.
Which is which?
The scope of any quality problems encountered could be more easily contained by knowing each tyre’s date of manufacture, lot size, and other data stored either in the memory in the tyre’s RFID tag, or in a company-controlled database that references a unique ID number for each tyre.
Unfortunately the many UPC barcodes found on new tyres doesn’t usually provide enough data and historical information to be able to identify the manufacturing process used for each tyre. As a result, many thousands of tyres have to be assumed to be potentially faulty after only one defect is discovered. In fact, if the nature of the manufacturing problem is quite isolated, only a very small number of tyres may be affected - and being able to track and isolate them can save a fortune in unnecessary recalls.
Wider adoption soon?
According to Dan Finch, president and CEO for Advanced ID, "We have been working with major tyre manufacturers around the world for almost two years to develop an RFID tyre tag that provides a life-of-tyre unique tyre ID number. The ability to keep track of individual tyres becomes increasingly important as a tool to minimise recall issues and to improve fleet management and tyre security capabilities, with the added benefit of better asset management."
Finch feels that major tyre recalls such as this latest one will serve to motivate the tyre manufacturing industry to adopt unique, permanent ID numbers for every tyre made. Several tire manufacturers, re-treaders, and fleet operators have already embedded Advanced ID’s tags or attached the company’s patches to their tyres. Some are now reported to be working with the company for larger deployments in manufacturing processes and fleet operations.
